Production of the Bolt was halted in 2023 amidst a widespread battery recall and the limitations of its first-generation EV platform, which couldn't integrate GM's advanced Ultium battery technology. However, GM didn't just signal a comeback; they promised a Bolt reborn with the cutting-edge Ultium architecture. Now, that promise is a tangible reality.

Subtle Refinements, Modern Touches: Design and Interior Updates

Visually, the new Bolt retains its familiar silhouette, a testament to its enduring appeal. Key exterior tweaks include a sleeker front fascia with headlights now connected by a slender black line, the elimination of the black surround on the decorative grille, and rear taillights repositioned higher. The bumper also boasts more body-colored elements, lending a more contemporary aesthetic. Inside, the cabin receives a significant upgrade. A prominent new central touchscreen commands attention, complemented by customizable ambient lighting and thoughtfully redesigned cupholders and storage compartments. The inclusion of physical climate and volume controls, alongside a heat pump for efficient winter operation, demonstrates a commitment to user-friendliness and practicality.

Cargo space remains impressively generous, mirroring the Bolt EUV with 453 liters of capacity with the rear seats up and a substantial 1,615 liters when folded. This efficient use of space rivals that of the significantly larger Equinox EV, showcasing the Bolt's compact yet cavernous interior.

The Heart of the Matter: Ultium Battery and Enhanced Performance

The most significant advancements lie beneath the surface. The new Bolt is built on the versatile Ultium platform and features a 65 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, sourced from CATL. This battery chemistry not only offers environmental benefits but also facilitates faster, more flexible charging. Owners can confidently charge to 100% nightly without compromising battery longevity. The LFP pack delivers an estimated range of 255 miles (approximately 410 km), a modest yet welcome improvement over its predecessor. The real game-changer, however, is charging speed. The new Bolt supports DC fast charging up to 150 kW, capable of replenishing the battery from 10% to 80% in a swift 26 minutes – a threefold increase in speed compared to the previous generation. Furthermore, the vehicle supports bidirectional charging (V2H) with a power output of up to 9.6 kW, enabling it to supply energy to a home grid. While vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality for powering external devices directly from the car isn't yet available, the inclusion of two USB-C ports in both the front and rear provides convenient device charging.

Adopting the North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector means seamless charging at Tesla Supercharger stations without adapters, though a CCS adapter will also be included. Powering the new Bolt is the same 210-horsepower electric motor found in the Chevrolet Equinox, promising acceleration from 0 to 60 mph (96.9 km/h) in approximately 6 seconds, aligning with its predecessor's spirited performance. The regenerative braking system has also been refined, offering both 'Low' and 'One-Pedal' driving modes. The 'High' setting provides robust deceleration, bringing the vehicle to a smooth stop even on inclines, without requiring brake pedal input.

Intuitive Software and Advanced Driver Assistance

In a somewhat polarizing move, GM has opted to forgo Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in favor of its proprietary software system. This decision, according to GM, is aimed at ensuring robust over-the-air updates and deeper integration with the vehicle's core functions. More excitingly, the new Bolt incorporates GM's Super Cruise, a sophisticated semi-autonomous driving system featuring Route Following capabilities, which allows for automatic lane changes and navigation through complex interchanges. This integration of premium autonomous features into a budget-friendly EV is unprecedented for GM.

Unbeatable Value: Pricing and Availability

The 2026 Chevrolet Bolt is slated for a U.S. market debut in early 2026, offered in several compelling configurations: the LT Base starting at an astounding $28,995, the LT Comfort at $29,990, and the sportier RS trim around $32,000. These prices are inclusive of destination charges, making the Bolt once again the most affordable EV from a major automaker in the United States.
