This group of local residents managed to create and promote a fake cryptocurrency, luring unsuspecting investors through clandestine channels on Telegram. The operation, a joint effort involving the Cyberpolice, National Police investigators, and the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU), was conducted under the watchful eye of the regional prosecutor's office.

They crafted a compelling narrative of wealth and success, using Telegram communities to showcase lavish lifestyles and purportedly lucrative trading deals. Once funds were transferred, the perpetrators would abruptly cut off access to the crypto wallets, effectively trapping investors and rendering their supposed assets inaccessible. The stolen digital funds were then laundered through anonymous services before being cashed out.

International Reach and Significant Losses

The scope of this fraudulent scheme extended beyond Ukrainian borders, with victims identified not only within Ukraine but also among investors from European and Middle Eastern countries. The investigation has so far pinpointed five Ukrainian citizens who fell prey to this elaborate deception. Authorities conducted thorough searches in both Khmelnytsky and Kyiv, leading to the seizure of crucial evidence, including mobile and computer equipment, offline cryptocurrency storage devices, incriminating handwritten notes, and even a collection of luxury vehicles, all indicative of the illicit gains.

The organizer of this criminal enterprise, along with three key participants, has been formally charged. They are facing serious accusations under Article 190, Part 4 (Fraud) and Article 362, Part 3 (Unauthorized actions with information processed in automated systems) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The potential punishment for these offenses carries a significant penalty of up to eight years of imprisonment. The pre-trial investigation is actively ongoing, suggesting that more individuals may be implicated.
