Rockstar's "Reprisal" in Slack: Banning Emojis and Off-Topic Chats Preceded Developer Layoffs
A growing controversy surrounding Rockstar Games and the development of Grand Theft Auto VI has taken a new turn, with former employees detailing a period of intense internal restrictions within the studio's Slack channels, which they claim contributed to the dismissal of 34 developers. While Rockstar maintains that the layoffs were due to "gross misconduct and the leak of internal information," former colleagues paint a different picture, suggesting a deliberate crackdown on employee communication and solidarity.
The "Slack Cleanup": Silencing Non-Work Discussions
Beginning in the autumn of 2023, Rockstar reportedly implemented a series of stringent measures within its internal Slack communications. These restrictions extended beyond simply prohibiting discussions about personal matters; employees were also forbidden from using emojis in their status updates. This move, according to former staff, served as a catalyst for the subsequent firings. Initially, several channels dedicated to informal discussions about pets, hobbies, and general gaming were shut down. This "Slack cleanup," as it was internally dubbed, was seemingly driven by management's perception that such non-work-related chats were detrimental to productivity and diverted attention from core development tasks.
Fostering Dissatisfaction and Perceived Union Busting
The sudden clampdown ignited a wave of discussion on a private Discord server used by the Rockstar United Workers union. Here, employees debated working conditions and company policies, notably steering clear of project specifics or the status of delayed titles like GTA VI. One now-former developer voiced their skepticism in the union's Discord: "I really wish I could see the evidence that are hitting productivity this hard. I can't imagine it's worth the complete chaos it's going to cause for morale." This sentiment underscores a feeling of disconnect between management's stated priorities and the human element of workplace satisfaction.
The Emoji Ban: A Symbol of Control and Suppression?
The situation escalated with a peculiar new directive: the prohibition of emojis in Slack status updates. Employees interpreted this as a deliberate attempt by management to stifle visible expressions of solidarity, particularly targeting the Palestinian flag and the Sprout emoji, which had become unofficial symbols of support for the burgeoning union. The subsequent discussions about these new rules, according to the union, revolved solely around official Slack usage memos and internal policies, not confidential project details. This interpretation, however, appears to have been met with a different understanding by Rockstar management, who allegedly used access to older Discord accounts to gather information for the subsequent dismissals. This act was widely perceived as an effort to suppress union-related activities.
Rockstar's Defense and the Fallout
In response to the allegations, Rockstar Games has vehemently denied any form of retaliation against unionized employees. A company representative previously informed Bloomberg that the dismissals were a consequence of certain employees "disseminating confidential information on a public forum," a statement that appears to align with the company's perspective on the discussions held on the union's Discord server. The controversy culminated in protests outside the London offices of Rockstar and its parent company, Take-Two Interactive. Many of the dismissed employees have expressed a desire to return to work on GTA VI, but no formal offer has been extended by the studio. Investigators from People Make Games noted that GTA VI's development is shrouded in extreme secrecy, leading the publisher to avoid divulging any unnecessary details – a point the union partially concedes. However, they argue that discussing projects and labor conditions are distinct matters, and the latter should be protected by labor laws.
