Samsung's Ultra-Slim Gamble Fizzles: Galaxy Edge Line Reportedly Axed After Just 5 Months
In a dramatic and swift U-turn, South Korean tech giant Samsung is reportedly pulling the plug on its ambitious "Galaxy Edge" smartphone line. Launched just five months ago with much fanfare as the epitome of ultra-slim mobile design, the series is said to have suffered from dismal sales, prompting the company to cease production.
A Flawed Formula for Thinness
Sources within Samsung, citing a report from Korean publication Newspim, reveal that the decision to discontinue the S25 Edge came after its sales figures failed to impress. While the S25, Plus, and Ultra variants of Samsung's flagship line sold a respectable 8.25 million, 5.05 million, and a staggering 12.18 million units respectively, the S25 Edge managed to move a mere 1.31 million devices by August. This stark contrast paints a clear picture: the market simply wasn't enamored with what the Edge offered at its price point.
When Thinness Comes at a Cost
The S25 Edge, released in May 2025, was lauded for its sleek 5.8mm-thick titanium chassis, a feat of engineering designed to push the boundaries of smartphone thinness. It boasted a vibrant 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with QHD+ resolution and a buttery-smooth 120Hz refresh rate, powered by the robust Snapdragon 8 Elite processor. However, this dedication to a slender profile appears to have come at a significant compromise. The 3900 mAh battery capacity, while adequate for some, proved to be a major deterrent for users who expected more longevity from a premium device, especially when priced slightly above the standard S25, starting at a steep $1100. In Ukraine, this translated to a daunting starting price of 54,999 UAH.
Shifting Priorities: From Edge to the Familiar Plus
Samsung's strategic vision for the Edge line was once bold, with the company reportedly considering it the "next-generation trend" and even earmarking it, rather than the Plus model, to be the key offering starting with the S26 series. However, the undeniable lack of consumer enthusiasm has forced a recalibration. The latest reports suggest that Samsung is now reverting to its trusted Plus model and has ultimately decided to abandon the Edge series altogether. The upcoming Galaxy Unpacked event in January is expected to feature at least three models: the S26, Plus, and Ultra. While a theoretical "Samsung S26 Edge" remains a possibility, its lifespan is widely predicted to be exceptionally short, if it materializes at all.
A Word on Battery Optimization
In a related note, Samsung is reportedly exploring ways to optimize battery life on its devices, with speculation suggesting a move towards throttling mobile internet speeds as a method to conserve power. This development, while not directly tied to the Edge's demise, underscores the ongoing industry-wide challenge of balancing cutting-edge features with practical battery performance.
