Ukrainian Horror Gem The Sinking City 2 Delayed to 2026 Amidst War Struggles

Ukrainian studio Frogwares has officially announced a significant delay for their highly anticipated survival horror title, The Sinking City 2. Originally hinted at for a 2025 release following a successful Kickstarter campaign, the developers have opted to push the launch to the first half of 2026. This decision stems from the formidable challenges of developing a game amidst the ongoing full-scale war in Ukraine.

The Unseen Toll of Conflict on Game Development

The realities of war have cast a long shadow over the development process. Sergei Oganesyan, Head of Publishing at Frogwares, vividly described the arduous conditions. "At one point, we were without electricity for several days – drones and rockets were hitting the power grid. When that tactic stopped working, massive drone attacks began every night, from midnight until dawn. You work all day, then you don't sleep, listening to explosions, and somehow you have to function in the morning… This constantly slowed us down – so much so that there's no point in rushing for a deadline that no longer feels important," he shared. The team recognized the need to protect their vision and their well-being, acknowledging that the situation in Ukraine is fluid, making a fixed deadline an impractical goal.

Beyond the Battlefield: A Genre Shift Presents New Hurdles

While the war's impact is undeniable, it's not the sole reason for the postponement. The Sinking City 2 represents a significant stylistic pivot for Frogwares, who have spent over two decades crafting narrative-driven adventure and detective games. The transition to the survival horror genre demands a fundamentally different approach to game design. "Moving to the survival horror genre has been a separate challenge for us. We've spent over 20 years creating adventure games with investigations, but this requires a completely different mindset. Tension, pacing, combat systems – everything works differently. We've always loved this genre as players, but when we started creating it ourselves, we realized how much more we still needed to learn," explained lead game designer Oleksandr Hresko. This creative evolution requires careful nurturing, underscoring the decision to allow ample time for mastery.

A Glimpse of the Future and What Lies Ahead

Although a precise release date remains elusive, Frogwares has assured fans that the wait is measured in months, not years, with a target of the first half of 2026. This extended development period may also have been influenced by the resources dedicated to the remaster of the original The Sinking City, a project that likely helped streamline the engine and mechanics for the sequel. To offer a tangible preview, the studio has unveiled a series of new screenshots showcasing the game's atmospheric, dimly lit environments, menacing enemies, and an overall enhanced grim ambiance. Frogwares has also promised to deliver more gameplay footage in the coming months, further whetting the appetite of eager players.

Platforms and Expectations for The Sinking City 2

The Sinking City 2 is slated for release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, with availability on major digital storefronts including Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG. The extended development timeline, coupled with the team's commitment to overcoming both wartime obstacles and genre-specific challenges, suggests a more polished and compelling experience for players upon its eventual arrival.
