The Phantom Department: DOGE's Demise and the Echoes of Elon Musk's Influence

In a move that has left many scratching their heads, the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a controversial agency that once boasted Elon Musk as a key figure, has been effectively dismantled. Officially, it "no longer exists" as a centralized entity, according to Scott Kuper, Director of the Office of Government Management, who confirmed its dissolution to Reuters just eight months shy of its mandated end date. This abrupt closure casts a long shadow over an initiative that, despite its ambitious pronouncements and headline-grabbing actions, ultimately failed to demonstrate significant efficacy.

From Grand Ambitions to Dissolution

Launched in January 2025, during the early days of Donald Trump's second term, DOGE was heralded as a swift instrument for cost-cutting within the federal bureaucracy. Its initial strategy involved aggressive reductions in federal personnel. However, as Kuper's statements and documents obtained by Reuters reveal, the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), the federal government's HR arm, has quietly absorbed many of DOGE's operational functions since the beginning of the month. This quiet absorption suggests a gradual fading rather than a definitive, celebratory shutdown.

Talent Redeployed, Not Lost?

While the department itself may be defunct, the individuals who staffed DOGE have not simply vanished. At least two prominent former DOGE employees have found new roles within the National Design Studio, a fresh organization established by a Trump executive order in August, tasked with enhancing government websites. This studio is headed by Joe Gebbia, a co-founder of Airbnb, who was part of Musk's DOGE team. Another DOGE alumnus, Edward Corristine, actively encouraged applicants on his X account to join the agency. Elsewhere, Zachary Terrell, who had access to sensitive government healthcare systems while at DOGE, now serves as the Chief Technology Officer for the Department of Health and Human Services. Similarly, Rachel Riley, who enjoyed comparable access, now leads the Office of Naval Research, according to the agency's official website. Jeremy Levin, instrumental in winding down USAID alongside Musk and the Trump administration, now oversees foreign aid at the State Department. These appointments hint at a strategic redeployment of talent, albeit under different organizational banners.

A Legacy of Controversy and Unfulfilled Promises

Throughout its brief existence, DOGE was a magnet for public scrutiny and criticism. Its operatives were accused of aggressively interfering with government agencies and gaining access to sensitive information, yet delivering minimal tangible benefits. Critics alleged that the organization actively targeted Trump's perceived opponents within the administration, and its operations raised significant concerns about the security of personal data belonging to American citizens. The animosity directed towards DOGE was so intense that it even spilled over onto Tesla, with activists creating maps and databases of DOGE employees and their associated properties. The parallels with Ukraine's initiative to launch its own "Ukrainian DOGE" for state apparatus optimization, as reported by Fedorov, underscore a global interest in such efficiency drives, but also highlight the potential pitfalls.

Musk's Departure and Lingering Questions

Elon Musk himself departed DOGE in May of this year. His exit preceded further peculiar statements regarding computers that could seemingly "print money out of thin air," often made while he himself appeared to be engaged with his work computer. This period was marked by an air of surrealism, blurring the lines between serious governmental reform and the whimsical, often unpredictable, nature of Musk's public persona. Despite the de facto liquidation of DOGE, government officials, including those at the State Department, insist that the commitment to optimizing expenditure remains a priority.
