Introducing Edge Light: A Virtual Ring Light for Windows 11 Video Calls

Windows 11 users now have a fantastic new tool that promises to elevate their video conferencing experience. Inspired by a popular feature on macOS, a new application called Edge Light has emerged, designed to replicate the effect of a professional ring light directly on your screen.

This innovative software casts a subtle, white glow around the edges of your display, effectively illuminating your face and the surrounding environment during video calls. What makes Edge Light particularly clever is its intelligent adjustment system. It utilizes your PC's Image Signal Processor to detect your presence and analyze the ambient lighting conditions, automatically fine-tuning the brightness for optimal clarity and a more flattering appearance. For those who often find themselves in dimly lit spaces, Edge Light can even activate automatically when it senses a dark setting, ensuring you're always well-lit.

From macOS Innovation to Windows Accessibility

The concept of screen-based ring lighting first gained traction with Apple's inclusion of a similar feature in macOS. However, the story for Windows users took a significant turn thanks to the efforts of Scott Hanselman, a prominent figure in the Microsoft developer community. Hanselman, inspired by the macOS feature, took it upon himself to create a free, open-source alternative for Windows PCs. He christened it 'Windows Edge Light' and made it readily available for download on GitHub.

Sean Endicott from WindowsCentral shared his initial impressions, noting, "I installed the app this morning after reading about it over the weekend. Windows Edge Light works as advertised, though its effectiveness is dependent on your monitor and the ambient lighting in your room. A dim IPS panel won't light up your face as much as a brighter screen." This sentiment highlights that while the software provides a significant boost, the underlying hardware still plays a role in the final result. Currently, the Windows version is in its early stages and might lack some of the advanced features found in its macOS counterpart. However, Hanselman has expressed his commitment to adding these functionalities in future updates, promising a steadily evolving and improving tool.

The Power of Open Source for Enhanced Collaboration
"Apple added “Edge Light” in macOS 26.2 which does a ring light on your screen for better video calls. I made WindowsEdgeLight. One .NET 10 single file executable. Auto updates. Enjoy!" - Scott Hanselman (@shanselman) November 19, 2025

The open-source nature of Windows Edge Light is a significant advantage. It empowers developers to scrutinize the code, propose enhancements, and even fork the project to create their own tailored versions. This collaborative environment fosters rapid development and allows the tool to adapt to the diverse needs of its user base. For individuals who rely heavily on video communication, such as remote workers and live streamers, this open approach offers a powerful and flexible solution. It provides a pathway for continuous improvement and customization, ensuring that Edge Light remains a relevant and valuable asset in the ever-evolving landscape of digital interaction.

This development comes shortly after Windows 11 rolled out other notable updates, including a refreshed Start menu and the introduction of a colored battery icon displaying the charge percentage. The ongoing enhancements to Windows 11 demonstrate Microsoft's commitment to refining the user experience with practical and innovative features.
